Weird Missoula’s February Showcase featuring Mass FM, Mountain Shark, Jacob Milstein, Ali Satterlee @ The Ole Beck VFW Post #209, Friday Feb. 21st

Our first foray into this “Monthly Showcase” was super fun! Here’s a belated THANK YOU to all you cool folks who came down to support an all local bill and the VFW. We will be doing are damnedest to keep these shows interesting but they’d never be successful if it wasn’t for you guys.

That said, we’d like to invite you to the next showcase deal TONIGHT at the VFW. We’d have gotten a blog entry up way earlier too if we hadn’t been hit by this annoying cold/fever/whatever hybrid that’s seemed to have infected a ton of people we know. UGH. It’s roughly 10am Friday morning right now. We’re feeling OK but just OK so pray we can survive this schmutz and have a cool time at this cool show.

And yeah, we think it’ll be pretty cool. Mass FM is playing their first show ever tonight. They’re a new band we’ve discovered via the Black National Recording Studio’s Chris Baumann. He, along with some former members of Volumen, Spirithole, and a current member of Bacon & Egg, have compiled nothing short of a Missoula “super group.” I have no idea what to expect.

Mountain Shark is a new(ish) band we heard randomly downtown a few months ago. They got an ex-member of Boys and they got a similar-kinda thing going on.

Anyone that knows us or follows the blog pretty closely should know by now that we’re a huge Jacob Milstein fan. He’s strumming along tonight in his own extra-cerebral-ish-way. The dude is a Missoula treasure. Check this out:

We love Ali Satterlee too. She’s played another Weird Missoula thing we put together over a year ago and she’s opening the show tonight. Shit’s magical.

Our (Weird Missoula’s) February Showcase features Mass FM, Mountain Shark, Jacob Milstein, and Ali Satterlee at the Ole Beck VFW Post #209 TONIGHT which is Friday, February 21st. Doors at 9pm, show at 10pm, cover is $3 and it’s 21+.

Friday The Thirteenth

(The illustrious VTO & Magpies split 7”)

Well it looks like Missoula is once again primed for the lndian Summer show season. Don’t really know why this is, but there are always a ton of good things happening in town right around the time the college kids are back, they’re puking on front lawns at 3pm on a Tuesday, and the whole cavalcade just keeps steaming along til whenever it gets too cold to just wear a sweater out there. Nice. There are some things you, dear reader, should probably know about (assuming you don’t already, you know).

First of all, local vets VTO and The Magpies are gearing up to release a split 7” (pictured above) at the Ole (pronounced “Oly”) Beck VFW Post #209 on Friday, September 13th. That’s this Friday. They’ll be joined by Thee Hounds and I believe the whole thing is $2. Cool, huh? Even cooler, there’s this video by Cade Donovan:

Also happening this Friday, there’s a FREE show at Stage 112 featuring the likes of Needlecraft, Skin Flowers, Jacob Milstein, and a new band featuring members of both Needlecraft and Baby & Bukowski: Pancakes9pm time I believe, too.

BUT DUDE, there’s gonna be cool stuff Saturday, too! Stay tuned for that…we’ll post something tomorrow.

ALSO…we don’t book shows too often (sorry touring bands, we busy) but we finally got one set up for Thursday, October 3rd at the ZACC. There’ll be more info on that in a little bit but in the meantime, check out this stuff by one of the dudes (Punishment) playing the thing:

Oll Breds We Miss You So

Do you remember Oll Breds? We do. One of our local treasures currently lost to the dustbin of mystery. Tom, their drummer, is no longer living in this Missoula town. We miss him. We miss them. Their guitarist, Jacob, recently threw up this video on the internets and we’re pretty happy he did so. Check it out for some COOL MUSIC plus a few glimpses of the aforementioned Tom & Jacob plus a couple of other Missoula musicians (aka celebrities?). I counted Bad Naked among the dancers near the end of the video.

Jacob Milstein — Graduation Music

This is the only kind of music I want to hear right now. It’s gray, fucking dreary, resoundingly desolate. Dark singer-songwriter-y, Leonard Cohen-y, completely Northern. That chalice is empty, dudes. It won’t ever get filled.

Jacob Milstein’s impending split LP(with Thomas Macfie) Graduation Music is quite a departure if you’re more familiar with his work as guitarist/singer-guy for locals Oll Breds. The thing is, Milstein’s been thumbing around for a while on the strength of these songs, a lot longer than his combo’s been raising roofs and/or breaking hearts.

Macfie’s second side is yet up for streaming on Bandcamp, but from everything we’ve heard from the source, it’ll be awesome too.

Chalk this one up to one of our favorite Missoula-related albums of 2012. When it gets released, probably around the first of December, it’s gonna be worth your every while.

Jacob Milstein’s side of Graduation Music is currently available for purchase via his Bandcamp page. The LPs will be available later this year.

Once again Mr. Matt Larubbio has wowed us with another killer VFW poster. This time it’s for Modality’s April Residency Series that, coincidentally, begins tonight. Like all the previous Larubbio prints, these full color, hand-screened posters are available for $8 each at the VFW. Just poke a bartender and they can help you out.
This is gonna be one fun month!
